About this IC
The SCM3406ASA is a half-duplex RS-485 transceiver for Modbus RTU and similar multi-drop field buses. Its receiver presents only 1/8 of a standard unit load, so a segment can carry up to 256 devices instead of the usual 32 without repeaters.
The A and B pins tolerate -15 V to +15 V and carry 15 kV HBM ESD protection, which is what keeps a board alive after a field wiring mistake. Note that this is a non-isolated transceiver: if the two ends of the cable can sit at different ground potentials, use an isolated transceiver module instead — ask us and we will quote from MORNSUN's TD range.
